OM’s Focus on the sahel region

What is the sahel region and where is it located?
The Sahel is a vast, semi-arid region in Africa that forms a transitional zone between the Sahara Desert to the north and the more fertile savannas to the south. It stretches across the continent, running east to west, and includes parts of several countries, such as Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, and Sudan. The region spans approximately 5,400 kilometers (3,355 miles) from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Red Sea in the east.
The Sahel is characterized by its harsh climate, with limited rainfall, long dry seasons, and periodic droughts. It supports grasslands and sparse vegetation, making it suitable for nomadic pastoralism and some subsistence farming. However, the region is prone to desertification, and its fragile environment is easily affected by climate challenges.
The Sahel is also a region of significant geopolitical and security challenges, including conflicts related to terrorism, insurgencies, and resource scarcity. The region has seen growing instability in recent years, with extremist groups operating in several areas and governments struggling to maintain control.
